The nail-biting battle of wits enthralled viewers all over the world and ultimately made some people aware of the outstanding Korean content that is available to subscribers everywhere.
Even with the show’s incredible popularity, it’s amazing to think that we almost missed Squid Game entirely.

Is the Squid Game Season 1 Overhyped?
Lee Jung-jae accepts the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Dramatic Series.
There were 14 overall Emmy Award nominations for Squid Game Season 1. It was the first series in a foreign language to be included on the short list for Outstanding Drama among those nominations.
The first actor to win in that category from a non-English series was Lee Jung-jae, who took home the gold for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of the series, took home the gold for Best Director for a Drama. Along with production design, stunt performance, visual effects, and guest actress Lee Yoo-mi (who played Sae-byeok’s friend Ji-Yeong), the program also took home Emmys.
Furthermore, Oh Yeong-su (as Oh Il-nam) won a Golden Globe for Season 1, and Lee Jung-jae and Hoyeoin (as Sae-byeok) won three Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Squid Game Season 2 Release Date on Netflix, Cast, & Story 2023
Maker Hwang Dong-hyuk told Vanity Fair, “People were telling me that it’s too unrealistic.” The endeavor was labeled absurd: a film concerning debt and poverty causing individuals to make severely life-threatening choices during an era in which real life was experiencing a worldwide economic downturn does seem very close to home.
Hwang set the screenplay aside in order to focus on other endeavors, although he did take another look at it in 2018. “It was a very strange experience,” he stated, “because what seemed so unrealistic at the time didn’t feel as unrealistic any more” .
However, after his adventures in the games, will we ever learn what’s going to happen to Gi-hun next? The second season of Squid Game is covered in full here.

Potential Squid Game Season 2 Release date: What time will it air?
“Excellent work. Ready, go ahead.” Squid Game has officially received the green light for a second season. This is not surprising considering the show’s popularity and viewership. So get your green trackies ready.
On June 12, 2022, Netflix revealed the good news through Twitter. A teaser video for the announcement included Young-hee, the show’s infamous big killer robot doll, with the number 2 flashing in her robot eye and her signature song playing in the background.
In the video, Hwang discussed his experience with Squid Game and stated, “Last year, it took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to existence, but it only took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever.
“A big shout out to the fans worldwide from the writer, director, and producer of Squid Game. We are grateful that you enjoy and watch our show.”
Squid Game season two is still under development; however, there is no official release date as of yet.
Hwang disclosed that he has “a set outline” for season two, finalized in July 2022. He said to E! when asked if some of the same thematic concerns would be covered in the second season, “I want to ask the question, ‘Is true solidarity between humans possible?'”
In the meantime, Allkpop was informed of the filming schedule in February 2023 by breakthrough star Lee Jung-jae, who has received accolades from both critics and fans for his depiction of the desperate protagonist Seong Gi-hun.
“Squid Game 2 is going to start in the summer, and its production is expected to continue for approximately ten months,” stated the actor. “We also worked on season 1 for almost ten months, but COVID-19 caused delays during that time. However, season two will likely take longer to finish because of its larger scope.”
This indicates that filming ought to be well underway by now, but keep checking back here for all the most recent developments.
WHAT DATE IS THE RELEASE OF SEASON 2?
Production on Squid Game Season 2 was scheduled to begin “later this year,” while series lead Lee Jung-jae hinted that filming “will likely last for about 10 months,” much like Season 1 did, during the cast’s first table read in late June 2023.
Although the timetable suggests a late 2024 release, it is unclear whether and to what extent the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes in the United States would impact production on the South Korean series.
What is the Storyline for Season 2?
The first season of Squid Game was intended to be “an allegory or fable about modern capitalist society, something that depicts an extreme competition, somewhat like the extreme competition of life,” according to series creator Hwang.
Hwang has stated that, as the first finale’s last scene hinted, Season 2 will follow Seong Gi-hun and his investigation into the people behind the tournament’s tragic origins, even if specifics are yet few.
Gi-hun will “do something for the world” in Season 2 after deciding in the last moments of Season 1 to stay behind in Korea instead of going to live with his daughter, who had migrated to the States, in order to take some type of retribution against the people who organized the deadly games he barely escaped, Hwang told the AP.
Who is Returning in Squid Game Season 2 (OLD CAST)?
Season 2 will include the return of Lee Jung-jae as the lead character Seong Gi-hun, as well as Lee Byung-Hun (as In-ho, also known as the Front Man, as shown above), Wi Ha-jun (as Hwang Jun-ho, the police officer who pretended to be a guard in order to find his brother), and Gong Yoo (as the game’s recruiter).

Season 2 cast for Squid Game: Its Same members From Squid Game Season 1?
Expect a few known characters in the next season, given the nature of the Squid Game itself. Of the 456 contestants in the first season, all but one of them perished.
But Seong Gi-hun is the one player we know we can always rely on to return. He managed to escape the game unscathed, but after witnessing someone else sign up for the massively lucrative life-or-death game, he found himself drawn back in.
Is Giant Doll in Squid Netflix is Still In Squid Game Season 2?
Can we expect the ugly big doll to return?
Season 2 will see the introduction of “her” lover, Cheol-su, according to series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk. There has been no news regarding the tall and menacing Young-hee making an encore return.
Additionally, Wi Ha-jun will return to the role of police investigator Jun-ho.
Variety also reports that a few additional players have been revealed. These include rapper Choi Seung-hyun (aka TOP), singer Jo Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David of Itaewon Class, Park Gyu-young of It’s Okay Not to Be Okay, Lee Jin-uk of Sweet Home, and Won Ji-an of DP.
Therefore, a good balance of male and female players should help to quell fan anger following the first cast update, which included Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Sung-hoon, and Yang Dong-geun as an all-male lineup.
Knowing that women will have the opportunity to suffer the same horrific deaths as men in the second season of The Deadly Games is a comfort.
Former participants, such as actors Park Hae-soo, Oh Yeong-su, and Hoyeon, could reappear, but maybe just in flashbacks as Gi-hun plays the games once again while grieving for his departed pals.
“So many personalities perished, especially those who were cherished. Hwang earlier spoke to Reuters and apologized for killing them so quickly. He also mentioned that he was “thinking what to do” since he wanted to “revive Ji-young, but her best friend Sae-byeok also died.”
The Storyline of Squid Game season 2: What will happen?
Gi-hun has defeated the game against all odds at the conclusion of Squid Game’s inaugural season. Still, the game isn’t done yet. Gi-hun learns that the tournament is still underway with new players after the founder of the Squid Game passes away.
With all of this, it would be easy to pick up the tale where Gi-hun is back in the lead role, doing his hardest to halt the game, just as he promises he will in those final minutes. And it appears that season two will follow that path.
Still, it’s difficult to see how Gi-hun, with his newfound fortune, could possibly overcome the game’s developers.
One problem is that his mop of flame-red hair makes it impossible for him to ever slip into anything without being seen. For unclear reasons, Gi-hun turned his naturally black hair a blazing crimson in the last episode.
Hwang Dong-hyuk disagrees, notwithstanding your opinion that it’s not that significant. It symbolizes his inability to return to his former self. He told Radio Times, “It’s also an indication of his anger.”
Hwang Dong-hyuk has recently clarified, nevertheless, in the previously cited interview with The AP, that “Gi-Hun will come back, and he is going to do something for the world”.
Meanwhile, it’s similar to Darth Vader with regard to the Front Man, who was formerly a winner but turned into a Front Man. Surely some become Jedi while others become Darth Vader.”
Stated differently, his humanity is demonstrated in a very submissive way. However, I believe that the lessons he took away from the games and his first season’s experience will all be applied more actively in the second season.”
Speaking with the magazine, he also disclosed that a different cliffhanger ending for the first season existed, one that might have put a stop to Gi-Hun’s storyline right there.
“We actually wrestled over two distinct possibilities for the ending,” he stated. “In the alternative potential ending, Gi-Hun would board the aircraft and depart. Naturally, there was also the instance in which he would face the camera and then turn around.
We couldn’t help but wonder if Gi-hun was correct to decide to leave and see his family in order to pursue his own happiness. Is it the most appropriate approach for us to put forward the query or the point we wish to make in the series?”
The way the story ended does make it possible for Gi-Hun to return for a second season, but if Hwang decides against it, there are still plenty of other ways for Squid Game to go on without him in season two.
“I’m dying to know what happened to him,” actor Wi Ha-Jun, who plays officer Hwang Jun-ho, said to Deadline. I want to find his brother, ask him a ton of questions, and see him back alive. As a brother, I would respectfully encourage him to investigate the general mysteries hidden inside the game, as I also desire to do so as a detective.
Hopefully, Hwang Dong-hyuk will find a way to preserve the other Hwang and look into the origins of the games, or at least his brother’s role in them, since the police character was a perfect way to introduce the public to the “back end” of the games.
The Front Man’s involvement seemed to create a major story hole, to say the least. If his brother had previously won the Squid Game competition, how did no one in his family realize that he had suddenly become extremely wealthy?
And why, this time around, when his brother was preoccupied with winning the games, would Jun-ho find his departure unusual when he didn’t a few years ago?
The actors will naturally be under pressure to provide a second season that is just as exciting as the first. A few cast members have shared their own insights on the impact of the show’s unprecedented popularity.

The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Hoyeon, who portrays Kang Sae-byeok, and she stated: “Since COVID, I believe that everything is faster, even online, and that’s why I couldn’t keep up with the Squid Game’s rapid growth.” It was difficult to follow.
“After it got effective, I dropped six pounds in a week. My inability to eat was not due to stress; rather, I was unaware of this sensation. “What’s happening, and who am I?” I was starting to lose who I was.
I can gradually acclimate to this success with people since I feel really at ease with the Squid Game crew right now. However, I thought, “What?” as I saw its progress alone at home.
Seong Gi-hun’s Lee Jung-jae agreed. Like Ho-yeon, I’m at a loss for how to handle this. What this is, I have no idea. despite the fact that my acting experience is [greater].
“The program received a lot of feedback from viewers expressing how much they loved it, and it was even highly successful in Korea. In Korea, it achieved great success.”
According to Newsweek, Lee Jung-jae was satisfied with how season one concluded, at least.
And the conclusion suggests that season two will go in a certain direction. “If Gi-hun can do anything for the world, I’ll be extremely proud of them indeed,” Jung-jae replied.
This mysterious hint is genuinely rather intriguing, since it suggests a distinct storyline for the character in season two. Let’s hope that when the last credits roll, we’re all really proud of him (but don’t anticipate a tidy conclusion; we can’t believe that even Netflix would like one of its greatest blockbusters to finish on a second season).

Is it too soon to inquire about Season 3?
Perhaps it isn’t.
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the developer of Squid Game, stated to KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) in December 2021, a few months after Season 1 debuted, that he was in negotiations with Netflix regarding Season 2 “as well as Season 3.” However, by June 2022, he estimated the chances of a third season (or more) at merely “50-50.”
According to the evidence available, a third season of Squid Game may already be in the works. “I’m in talks with Netflix for season two in addition to season three,” Hwang stated in December 2021 to Korean broadcaster KBS (via Korea Times). We’ll reach a decision soon enough.”
